Five Tips For Teenage Skin

Um... teen skin’s easy, you guys. Just splash some water on it every now and then. You’ll be fiiiiine. 

Kidding! Kidding. Dealing with teen skin can be incredibly frustrating. We get it. The raging hormones teenagers (that’s you!) experience are known for triggering overproduction of oil. (This is why it’s pretty common to have greasy, acne-prone in your teens.) 

It’s not all bad, though. There are things you can do to help your skin. And we’ve gathered them all right here, just for you. (We’re generous like that.)

1. Cleanse Twice A Day 

First things first. You should wash your face twice a day. Breakouts and acne occur because of an overproduction of oil which results in a clogged pores and the growth of bacteria inside your hair follicles. And as excess oil is very common in teen skin, cleansing morning and night is non-negotiable to remove excess oil and stop it from causing congestion. 

Some things to look for: 

– Cleansers with salicylic acid or willow bark extract will give skin a really good clean and get rid of excess oil.

– Something with a pH between 4.5-5.5. (Your skin naturally sits in this range, so you should stick with something similar so as not to disrupt it.)

2. Invest In A Trusty Spot Treatment

Sometimes breakouts happen. (To all of us!) (And that’s okay!) If you do happen to get a pimple or two, it’s a good idea to have a targeted spot treatment on hand to sort them out fast. 

Some things to look for:

– This Mario Badescu one has an obsessed, cult-y following. It drys out surface spots, therefore speeding up the healing process and reducing inflammation. Clever! 

3. Add In A Gentle Exfoliant 

Chemical exfoliants (ahem, such as our own) do a tremendous job at giving an extra deep clean. They get rid of any leftover gross stuff from your pores and stop dead skin cells building up. Try adding one in once a week and then gradually build up to twice a week. And always, ALWAYS use a dedicated SPF product the day after. (And also everyday because sun protection is an everyday, all-year-round thing.) 

Some things to look for: 

– Something with lactic acid, which is known for being very effective and the most gentle of all AHAs.

4. Wash Your Pillowcases Regularly

And your makeup brushes! And your towel! (And everything that regularly touches your face.) These are all spots where sweat, dirt, bacteria, and other gross stuff are known to build up and cause congestion. As a rule, you should be aiming to wash them all at least once a week. 

Some things to look for: 

– Fragrance-free washing detergents. Their heavily fragranced counterparts can cause irritation for sensitive-skinned dames if you’re not careful. 

5. Balance Your Skin With A Face Oil 

Using oil on oily skin may seem counterproductive/ridiculous, but it’s not. The oils in a face oil are different to those produced by the skin, so they don’t add more oil, but rather they help regulate the oil your skin is producing and really hydrate your skin. (And remember: oily skin is very often dehydrated.)

Some things to look for:

– Face oils with buriti or jojoba oil. These are 15/10 for hydration, while also being really soothing and lightweight. Exactly what your skin needs, in other words.
