As TikTok has taught us, the perfect colour palette is a tried-and-true shortcut to enhancing your features and just generally looking your very best. And your perfect blush palette is no different.
Fortunately! Finding your perfect blush colouring doesn’t take us rocking up to your house with a swatch book (although we’d love to). It’s just a few questions to help you identify your skin’s undertones and decide what’s going to work best for you.
Don’t know what to pick in a sea of endless pink shades? This guide should help.
Why find your perfect blush shade?
Skincare comes with plenty of rules: Don’t mix your vitamin C and vitamin A, never forget your SPF, and work thinnest to thickest. Makeup, on the other hand, is a pretty lawless land.
You should (always) remember to take it off after a night out—but other than that, you’re free to do whatever you want. Including, wear any shade of blush your heart desires.
But! If you want to get the most out of your blush—and have this cheek staple not only awaken your face with a fresh flush, but create balance, add dimension, and enhance your natural glow—listen up.
But how do I know my skin’s undertones?
Finding the right blush shade comes down to corresponding it with your skin’s undertones. Your undertone is that subtle colour underlying your skin. Unlike your general skintone, your undertone remains constant even if it’s the height of summer or the thick of winter. It’s this shade that tends to have the biggest impact on how colours interact and appear on your skin.
There’s three main undertones that your skin could be:
Cool undertones
These have hints of pink, red, or blue beneath the surface.
How to tell if that’s what you have: Silver jewellery usually suits this undertone best (more than gold)—and veins may appear blue or purple.
Warm undertones
These have golden, peachy, or yellow hues beneath the surface.
How to tell if that’s what you have: Gold jewellery will probably look best on you and your veins appear more green-ish than blue.
Neutral undertones
These are a balanced mix of both warm and cool tones. This means the skin doesn’t lean too pink or too yellow.
How to tell if that’s what you have: People with neutral undertones often find that both silver and gold jewellery suit them equally well. (Lucky squids!)
How to pick your blush according to your undertone?
The secret to creating a harmonious and natural-looking flush is to match your blush undertone with your skin undertone. That means:
Warm undertones should reach for blush shades with warm tones, like coral, orange-red, and terracotta. Like our Rosy shades.
Cool undertones should reach for blush shades with a pink or blue base, such as pink, rose, and mauve. Like our Berry or Peach shades.
Neutral undertones can reach for either or! They can balance both warm and cool tones from the peachiest-pinks to soft roses and brown-y mauves.
