Skincare might do a lot of the heavy lifting on the daily, but there’s no denying that something a little more intensive can do wonders—particularly for mature skin types.

Don’t know where to start when it comes to this wondrous world of lasers and lights? Neither. That’s why I asked dermal clinician, Yadira Galarza Cauchi, what skin treatments actually deserve your very valuable money, time, and sanity.

What advice do you have for mature skin types interested in trying skin treatments?

“Focus on stimulating collagen and supporting skin quality, rather than chasing quick fixes.

Skin health is consistent, so there isn't one magic treatment that does it all. However, as we age, we do need to be incorporating gentle collagen-stimulating treatments into our routines, such as needling, lasers and chemical peels, coupled with the right at-home skincare to keep the skin healthy and maintain results.”

What are the best skin treatments for mature skin types and how do they work?

“As we age, the most effective treatments are those that stimulate collagen, improve cell turnover, and address pigmentation, which is why needling, lasers, and chemical peels tend to work so well.

Skin needling (microneedling) works by creating tiny controlled micro-injuries in the skin, which triggers the body’s natural wound-healing response and stimulates new collagen and elastin production. This helps improve fine lines, skin texture, and overall firmness over time.

Laser treatments use targeted light energy to heat the deeper layers of the skin, stimulating collagen while also addressing concerns like pigmentation, redness, and uneven tone. Pigment and dullness can often make us look older, so I am obsessed with pico and gentle resurfacing lasers that lead to smoother, brighter, and more even-looking skin. Vascular lasers are great for redness concerns. Different lasers target different concerns, so the right one for the skin always needs to be personalised.

Chemical peels use carefully selected acids to exfoliate the upper layers of the skin, increasing cell turnover and helping improve dullness, pigmentation, and fine lines while encouraging fresher, healthier skin to come through. There are also so many different strengths, and I personally couple them with every treatment I do in my clinic.”

If you could give one piece of advice to mature skin types, what would it be?

“Focus on consistency over quick fixes. Learn what your skin needs and see a professional for some guidance if you're confused.

Consistency with both the right skincare and treatments will = great skin health over time.”
