If there is one ideal most of us are in the pursuit of when it comes to our skin, it’s that effortless ‘I woke up like this’ glow. Sounds simple but there’s a fine line between looking glowy (desired effect) and unintentionally looking oily (not-so-desired).
Glowing skin itself can sound like a bit of a myth for us oily skin haver-ers— just how does one have a dewy complexion without their T-zone ending up like an oil slick?
Let’s break down the foolproof methods for luminous, never greasy, skin:
Moisturise—We Mean It!
There’s a myth that still haunts many oily skin owners: Avoid moisturiser.
Safe to say this has been completely debunked. If you have oilier skin and don’t moisturise, your skin will try and compensate by activating your sebaceous glands to produce even more oil. Think: The aforementioned oil slick.
Instead of skipping moisturiser, look for light, water-based formulations. They’re less likely to contribute to your oiliness and instead, stop your skin from overcompensating. Oil-free, bouncy gel-creams are a great pick—offering intense hydration without the heaviness.

Get To Know Your Active Ingredients
Actives help target specific concerns, whether it be dullness, dryness, oiliness. In the case of a glow gone missing, you should be reaching for actives that improve skin texture and tone.
In the AM: Vitamin C
This multitasking ingredient boosts collagen production, neutralises free radicals (a major source of dullness) and inhibits melanin production (which can lead to hyperpigmentation and dark spots). In other words, it helps even out skin tone and amps up radiance.
In the PM: Vitamin A
By regulating sebum production and speeding up cell turnover, vitamin A delivers that lit-from-within glow while minimising oiliness. Genius. If you’re new to vitamin A, start slow and increase your application as your skin adjusts.
Less Really Is More
It’s safe to say, many of us reached peak skincare a few years back—when our routines blew out to 574 steps worth of products we simply did not need (and may not have been working in our favour).
As the adage goes: Less is more. Especially if you’re managing oily skin.
Stripping back your skincare routine to basics can be the way to achieve this. We recommend:
-
Cleanser: Reach for a cleanser formulated with ingredients that will help combat shine as it cleanses. Think: Salicylic acid (or its non-irritating equivalents like willow bark extract).
-
Exfoliate: Swap harsh, gritty scrubs for an exfoliating toner, loaded with oil-controlling actives like BHA and AHA.
-
Treat (serums go here!): Now your shine’s under control, slot a vitamin C serum into your AM routine to boost glow and slowly start adding a vitamin A serum into your night routine.
-
Moisturise: Lock in all this hard work with a dollop of oil-free moisturiser.
-
SPF (every morning.) (No excuses.): Non-greasy, non-shiny formulas, stacked with skincare ingredients are your go-to here.
