To protect, nourish, and treat acne-prone skin we’ve knowingly formulated a series of cleansers, exfoliators, serums, oils, moisturisers, and SPF with deep cleaning, and ultra calming properties. 

Here are our top tips for banishing those relentless breakouts: 

  1. Look for actives that are going to prevent pores from clogging (salicylic acid and retinoids), powerhouse hydrators that strengthen the skin barrier (hyaluronic acid), and overall, lightweight formulas that will help balance sebum production.  
  2. Don’t pick. Don’t panic. And if possible, seek expert advice. 

Combining a personalised skincare strategy, with advanced dermatological treatments and lifestyle changes (where necessary), can help to manage your acne. 

What is acne-prone skin? 

Not oily, not dry, not normal, but somewhere in between, or overlapping, these three key skin types. 

It is characterised by persistent acne, which is very different to the cluster of whiteheads you nursed as a teen. These breakouts are inflammatory, generally red and sensitive, and tend to take up residence around the mouth, chin, and jawline. 

What causes acne-prone skin? 

Genetics really matter; if acne runs in your family you are highly likely to experience the same skin concerns. But there are instances where acne is out of your control. Physical and emotional triggers like illness, medication, pregnancy, chronic stress, hormonal imbalances, can all cause acne as well. 

How can I tell if my skin is acne-prone? 

Recurring blemishes and congestion are a tell tale sign, otherwise, you might notice your skin is particularly shiny, and generally features large or coarse pores throughout your t-zone. 

How do I know if a product is suitable for acne-prone skin? 

The MO for acne-prone skin should be to remove any excess oil without stripping the skin. Look for products that are described as gentle, non-comedogenic*, or clinically proven to reduce blemishes. Ultimately, skincare that is going to provide an expert level of nourishment without clogging pores. 

Properly Clean is made with willow bark extract, an extremely gentle version of salicylic acid that ensures your skin is clean but never dry, tight, or unbalanced. Clarifying Exfoliator is made with 2% salicylic acid to help dissolve blackheads, clear breakouts, and banish unwanted congestion. And, Very Lightweight Moisturiser is the oil-free gel-cream that offers intense hydration with a matte finish and zero residue. 

*Comedones is the scientific name for a type of pimple or blemish that is caused when a pore becomes blocked by excess sebum, dead skin cells, or hair. So, in skincare, non-comedogenic is used to describe ingredients/formulas/products that don’t clog pores, and don’t cause comedones. Handy!

What skincare ingredients should I avoid if I have acne-prone skin? 

While we wish there was a one-size-fits-all routine we could give you to take care of acne-prone skin, it’s not as simple as that. (That’s why we recommended seeking personalised advice.)

But you can get more acquainted with skincare labels: Steer clear of any products that contain parabens or sulfates which can aggravate the skin and cause inflammation. Synthetic fragrances are another common irritant which can exacerbate your breakouts. And heavy butters or oils (namely, coconut) whilst a saviour for dry and dehydrated skin, is a known comedogenic ingredient. 

Oh, and you’ll want to stay very on top of cleaning your makeup brushes and beauty tools (which you do anyway, right?) to avoid introducing additional bacteria to the skin. 

And removing your makeup before bed. Always.
