Get Rid Of Build Up, Get Back To Glow

Exfoliating has always been a must-do for healthy skin.

But its importance is like, 100-fold when you’ve been going heavy on face cream, or if you’re clever enough to be wearing SPF daily. (Which you obviously are.)

Let us explain.

Your daily SPF and lush moisturisers are excellent (and essential) for nourishing and protecting the skin. But, when you slack off with exfoliants all of that product (plus all your dead skin cells, plus other grime and gross stuff) can hang around on your face long after you want them to.

That sounds gross…

It is! And it can lead to clogged pores, breakouts, congestion, dullness and the build-up prevents your other products from penetrating deeply and actually, um, working.

So, what’s the best kind of exfoliant to use?

Everyone’s different, but we’re firmly on Team Chemical Exfoliants (ahem, which is why we made our very own ultra-useful, ultra-gentle Exfoliating Swipeys) because they don’t rely on harsh, scrubby particles to clear away the gross stuff. And because they tend to provide a far more gentle, thorough exfoliation and have way better table manners.

There are two types of chemical exfoliants (AHAs and BHAs). But if you’re looking to clear away a build-up of dead skin cells AND keep your skin happy and radiant? You want AHAs.

K! And how do these AHA things actually work?

AHAs break down the glue that hold skin cells together, which forces cell turnover to speed up. Increased cell turnover leads to fresh, new skin cells and a good wallop of glow.

There are a few different kinds of AHAs (like glycolic, lactic and citric) but we opted for lactic acid in Swipeys. Because it’s effective and wonderful, obviously, but also because it’s known to be the most gentle on skin. And thanks to sodium lactate (the sodium salt of lactic acid) it also has a very good natural moisturising factor for the skin. Nice.

How often do I use them?

You should be exfoliating two-three times a week to keep your skin happy and glowing and your pores seriously clean.

Any more than three times a week can lead to over-exfoliation, which compromises the skin’s barrier (as bad as it sounds!) and causes all kinds of havoc for your skin.

To put it simply: If you’re exfoliating as often as Pete Davidson is dating Hollywood 'it girls', you’re overdoing it.

Slow down, immediately. We mean it.

Anything else I’ve got to know?

AHAs lead to increased sun sensitivity, meaning that anyone using AHAs must wear daily sun protection. (As should all people, everywhere, really.)

Also. Your shoes look great with that outfit.

K! Bye!
